SUV in Paris: 54% of Voters Support Increase in Parking Fees

The residents of the capital were consulted on the significant increase in parking fees for SUVs and heavy vehicles. Out of the 1.3 million voters invited to vote in 38 polling stations, the majority expressed their support for the introduction of specific pricing for the parking of these bulky and polluting vehicles. Support for this measure amounted to nearly 54.55%, as reported by BFMTV.

However, the implementation of this new provision will not be immediate. The city officials will first need to discuss the issue at the Paris Council in May. If adopted, the city will then need several months to implement it.

“Increased revenues of around 35 million”
In Paris, where initiatives such as the pedestrianization of the banks of the Seine and the greening of 200 streets have already been implemented, Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo argued in favor of this vote, emphasizing the need to fight pollution, promote better sharing of public space, and improve road safety. The Municipality claims that accidents involving SUVs are twice as deadly for pedestrians as those involving standard cars.

According to the City Hall, around 10% of the car fleet would be affected by this surcharge, which could generate around 35 million euros in additional revenue. This is the second vote in the capital, with the first one approving the removal of dockless scooters in April 2023.
