Closure of Paris-Lyon TGV Line for 4 Days in November

SNCF announced the closure of the TGV Paris-Lyon line for four days, from November 9 to November 12. This closure is necessary to prepare for the implementation of a new signaling system that aims to improve train reliability and increase capacity by 25% by 2030.

The ERTMS signaling system, a European standard, will be installed during the closure. This system will also enhance interoperability between different European rail networks. The closure will involve 1,000 workers working continuously for 101 hours to install the new system.

During this period, the train schedule will be adjusted, with fewer trains running on the Paris-Lyon route and longer travel times via the classic line. The extensive work being done is a world first for an operational high-speed rail line.

With the new signaling system, the frequency of trains can increase from 13 to 16 per hour in each direction. The total cost of the project is €820 million, with funding from SNCF Réseau and the European Commission. The completion of the project is expected by 2025.

The project includes modernizing signaling equipment, establishing a centralized control center, and improving electrical power. Companies currently using the line will not need to modify their rolling stock and will benefit from additional time slots on a highly utilized line.
