Nazi Scandal Erupts at Rome Derby as Attendee Spotted Wearing Hitler Jersey Claimed to be German

Serie A: Nazi scandal at the Rome derby! Man with Hitler jersey is said to be German

Controversial Jersey Worn by Lazio Fan

The Rome derby between Lazio and AS (1-0) ended with a photograph of a Lazio fan going viral on social media. The supporter was seen wearing a jersey with the number 88 and the name “Hitlerson,” a clear Nazi allusion.

Since “H” is the eighth letter in the alphabet, many members of the far-right scene use the number 88 as an abbreviation for “Heil Hitler.” Following the jersey scandal, the fan was quickly identified by the police.

Several cameras in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico filmed him entering and leaving the Monte Mario stand. It is said to be a German who was noticed at the derby in 2009, where he was sent off and reported because he stormed onto the field.

The fan may now face jail for glorifying National Socialism. A prison sentence of up to 18 months and a fine of up to 6000 euros are possible.

Anti-Semitic Incidents During the Game

The jersey scandal wasn’t the only incident at the Rome derby. During the game, Lazio fans chanted obnoxious anti-Jewish slurs, such as:

“I’m Lazio and I’m racist, we’re the brownshirts, we feel sorry for you with that yarmulke.” You have a father who was deported, and your mother is Anne Frank. Romanista (AS Roma fans, ed.) You are a rabbi, unleavened bread, lamb, and you celebrate Hanukkah.”

Two Romanian Lazio fans also showed the Roman salute and were subsequently identified. The Italian football governing body (FIGC) has already requested an investigation.

Lazio Takes Action Against Racist Fans

In response to these incidents, Lazio publicly condemned them on their website. They wrote, “We have always been at the forefront, especially under the current presidency, to avoid any discriminatory, racist, or to publicly condemn, prevent, and unconditionally suppress any anti-Semitic demonstration or action.”

It remains to be seen what repercussions the fans involved will face, but it is clear that both the club and the football governing body are taking these incidents seriously.
