The makeover episode of Germany’s Next Top Model (GNTM) is always highly anticipated by fans, and this season is no exception. Heidi Klum is sparing some models from drastic changes, but 18-year-old Selma May is not one of them. Selma is known for her long brown hair, ice-blue eyes, and radiant smile, but she is not entirely satisfied with her current mane.
In the fifth episode, Selma sits in the hairdresser’s chair, where star-hairdresser Cervando Maldonado makes short work of her hair, cutting off half of it. At first, Selma seems relaxed, but as her hair falls centimeter by centimeter, her good mood fades. Model mom Heidi watches her and asks directly what hair color Selma wants. Selma timidly suggests pink, but when her hair is dyed that color, she starts to cry, fearing she’ll look like a flamingo. However, she eventually makes friends with her new look.
However, not all models are happy with their makeovers. When Heidi tells 20-year-old Sarah that her hair will be shortened and undergo a bigger change, Sarah bolts, unable to let go of her long black mane. Anya also has a dramatic reaction to her pixie cut, initially shocked by how short it is and even claiming to hate it.
Despite the tears and drama, fans can take heart that past seasons have shown that candidates with the biggest type change tend to get far in the competition.
