Veeam’s Latest Release, v12a, Empowers Object Storage as an Efficient Backup Source

Veeam Backup & Replication: v12a masters object storage as a backup source

The highly anticipated release of Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) v12a has been announced by the manufacturer, Veeam. The last major version, v12, was released earlier this year and is also the basis for the Veeam Data Platform, which includes automation platform Veeam Recovery Orchestrator and monitoring tool Veeam ONE, among other features.

One of the key new features of v12a is the ability to back up object storage, such as Amazon’s S3 or Azure Blob Storage, as a backup source through VBR. Users can restore complete object storage buckets or individual objects and their versions. The new release also includes inline detection of anomalies, such as those caused by ransomware attacks, while the backup job is still running. However, customers must still scan their backups through antivirus software to detect any ransomware still dormant.

Veeam v12, which was released earlier this year, includes optional two-factor authentication and the option of communicating with Veeam components through the more secure Kerberos authentication method. It also introduced a wizard to help administrators avoid misconfigurations that could compromise Veeam environment security and a new copy mechanism, Veeamover, for automatically migrating backup data to more efficient or secure backup repositories.

The VeeamOn in-house exhibition took place in hybrid form this year, with 1,500 participants in attendance and an additional 15,000 online. The lectures and workshops have been made available for viewing free of charge after registration. The v12 release is already available for download, with v12a expected to be released later this year.
