New Year in Paris: Cars Banned in City Center

In the context of “Paris Respire,” the city hall will extend the duration of its operation until the passage to the new year. No cars in sight. On the occasion of the holiday season, the city of Paris has decided to extend its “Paris Respire” day for the passage to the new year. According to our colleagues at Le Parisien, the day banning all motorized vehicles from the capital on one Sunday per month will be extended until 12:30 a.m. on Monday, January 1, 2024. This will allow the revelers to celebrate the new year’s arrival without worrying about cars.

In detail, only the first four districts of the capital will be affected by this special day. Launched in 2008, “Paris Respire” allows the capital’s residents to “fully enjoy the Parisian space” once a month. On these days, the circulation of motorized vehicles is prohibited in vast areas of the capital.

Normally, these days end around 6 p.m. This December 31, the city decided to extend the hours. “We are adapting to match the passage to the new year so that pedestrians can fully enjoy the neighborhood,” they said in the halls of the city hall to our colleagues.

Champs-Élysées, Place de la Bastille… The list of affected areas include the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th arrondissements of Paris. If the most beautiful avenue in the world is not on this list, rest assured it will be pedestrianized for one evening this Sunday, December 31. As for each edition of “Paris Respire.” On the Champs-Élysées, revelers can also celebrate the arrival of 2024 without worrying about cars.

For New Year’s 2023, the fireworks had also made their grand return. A pyrotechnic show is also planned for this Sunday. The city hall plans to highlight the entry into the Olympic year for the capital on this occasion.
