Former Queen Beatrix Sustains Broken Wrist in Skiing Accident

Ex-Queen Beatrix injured in skiing accident: broken wrist

Former Dutch Queen Beatrix, who is 85 years old, recently had an accident while skiing in Austria. According to the royal court, she broke her wrist in Lech, where her son Johan Friso had an accident exactly eleven years earlier. Friso was buried by an avalanche and was in a coma for a year and a half before passing away at the age of 44.

Fortunately, Queen Beatrix’s accident ended better. She underwent an operation and is now resting at Drakensteyn Castle near Utrecht, where she has lived since abdicating the throne in 2013. The mini-castle was purchased by Beatrix in 1959 when she was still in line for the throne.

Despite the tragedy that struck her family in Lech, skiing remains a passion for the former queen. She and her family have been skiing in Austria for decades. In fact, a photo from 2015 shows Beatrix enjoying a skiing holiday with her son Willem-Alexander, who succeeded her as king, and Crown Princess Amalia.

Thankfully, this accident did not end in tragedy for Queen Beatrix. She is already reportedly doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.
