Resident Evil 4 Remake: An Unpopular Game?
Capcom has been on a roll lately, particularly with the Resident Evil saga, which receives installments and ambitious remakes every one or two years. The PS5 version of Resident Evil 4 has an average of 93 on Metacritic among media reports, with 107 media reviews, but has a user rating of 71 with 1,350 user reviews at the time of writing. Xbox and PC versions also have low user ratings.
Why Are Fans Disappointed?
Without ideological motives behind the criticism, it is interesting to analyze why some fans are so disappointed with this game. Reading several user reviews, we made the following conclusions:
- Deleted content: There is no Mercenaries mode or modes with Ada.
- Lost Tone: It is more serious than the original’s “B series” tone, and Leon is boring (with mediocre voice acting).
- Story: The story is the same without much evolution, and the game has become more “average.”
- Action-Focused: Some compare it to RE5, which is overly focused on action and lost the original’s atmosphere.
- Combat and Aiming: The combat and aiming system is slower and less satisfying, with fewer beheadings.
- Bosses: The bosses recycle their movements and are simplistic (U-3 is removed).
- Secondary Missions: The Peddler secondary missions are intrusive, like an open-world game.
- Visuals: Despite being more detailed, the visuals are too dark, dull, and monotonous.
- Puzzles: The puzzles are tedious, based on trial and error, and the AI is unfair.
- Performance: Poor performance on consoles, with almost no 60 fps, worse on PS4.
- Realism: By adding more realism, the fun factor is ruined.

Resident Evil 4 Remake may not be a “zero potato” game, but it is not an outstanding one either.
