Is Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS4 Worth the Hype?

Resident Evil 4 Remake is one of the last AAA games that PlayStation 4 has received. This year, the platform will celebrate its tenth anniversary, and with its successor, PlayStation 5, already more than established by now. Capcom has not wanted to leave the more than 110 million PS4 users aside, many of whom have not yet switched to PS5, and from the same day, we have an “old-gen” version of Resident Evil 4.

As the only one in the old consoles, no Xbox One version, many are wondering if it’s worth it? Should PS4 users play this version of Resident Evil 4, or wait until they own a PS5 or Xbox Series X to play it?

Technical Analysis of Resident Evil 4 on PS4

Digital Foundry’s review of the PS4 version of Resident Evil 4 is benevolent and positive. They describe it as an impressive achievement and overall looking as it should on an already impressive A game. But upon closer inspection, there are numerous details that can take you out of the experience.

The resolution of the textures has been cut, and some can take up to 10 seconds to load. The lighting in some scenes also seems to have been cut, causing some scenes to lose some of the atmospheres we see in the other versions. Some light sources don’t cast shadows or vegetation is static. The resolution is 1600×900 on a normal PS4. On PS4 Pro, in resolution mode, it does reach 4K, but with the same graphical absences mentioned before.

Is It Playable?

On PS4, the game hovers around 35 – 50 fps, resulting in a very shaky experience. On PS4 Pro, you can choose from two modes, and the performance mode does reach 60 fps. Still, in resolution mode, PS4 Pro performs worse than the original model, around 30 fps and dropping to 20 on some occasions.

Are They Recommended?

According to Digital Foundry, the PS4 versions have many technical compromises but are playable and attractive on their own. Although, given the circumstances, this is not a case of Cyberpunk 2077. However, as it’s a remake of a game that you have probably played before, and that is not that old, the point of the remake, in our opinion, is to see it in the best possible light.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has a Free Upgrade from PS4 to PS5

In the end, the final argument for whether Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS4 is worth it is whether it has a free upgrade to PS5. And the answer is yes, just like it happened (retroactively) with Resident Evil 2, RE3, and RE7. If you have PS4, there is no reason why you should deprive yourself of enjoying Resident Evil 4 Remake, even if it’s not the best version of all, even if you plan to buy a PS5 in the future. You will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free with your new console and enjoy it again with better graphics.
