Discovering Apple’s Covert Apps for Accessory Manufacturers

Secret thing: Apple's hidden apps for accessory manufacturers

Apple’s “Accessory Developer Assistant” app was hidden from public view, but has now been revealed. The app provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Apple works with accessory manufacturers. It is a tool that manufacturers can use to ensure their products meet Apple’s quality criteria. The app can be found via a direct link and is only available to those who develop hardware accessories for Apple products that connect electronically to the devices. This includes AirPlay audio devices, Car Key, CarPlay accessories, and HomeKit smart home products.

The Accessory Developer Assistant enables manufacturers and developers to test the interaction of their products with Apple devices. For example, they can test the autofocus of an iPhone or iPad, or whether the compass is working correctly. The app also has options for checking NFC connections and a device’s battery discharge in connection with the accessory. If all tests are passed, the devices can be presented to Apple for approval. Successful approval will allow manufacturers to provide their product packaging with appropriate badges, such as “Made for iPhone.”

Apple is well-known for its secretive approach to details such as these, and accessory manufacturers must sign an NDA. The NDA includes information on the license fees that manufacturers must pay to Apple in order to receive certification. Before this app, links to a Car Keys test app and a certification app for the GymKit had already appeared online. These apps enable electronic car keys and fitness devices to be certified as Apple accessories.

It is worth noting that apps supporting this process have been around for some time. However, since the beginning of 2022, Apple has made it possible for apps to be invisible in the App Store, although they can still be accessed via a direct link. This unlisted status is similar to that of YouTube videos. However, it cannot simply be changed again with a mouse click. The Accessory Developer Assistant app is quite unadorned but is nonetheless an important tool for accessory manufacturers that work with Apple.
