Writers and Academics in Paris Pay Tribute to Guadeloupean Historian Jean-Pierre Sainton

Nearly three weeks after his disappearance, tributes to Guadeloupean historian Jean-Pierre Sainton continue. On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, the world of culture gathered in Paris for a literary evening in homage to Jean-Pierre Sainton at the Calypso bookshop: a temple of ultramarine and Caribbean literature. Paris honored the memory of Jean-Pierre Sainton during a literary evening at the Calypso bookshop.

Martinican writers and academics Suzanne Dracius and Corinne Mencé-Caster participated in the tribute to Jean-Pierre Sainton, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of the Antilles, former dean of the Pluridisciplinary Department of Letters, who passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023, at the age of 68.

His research in social, cultural, and political history of the French Caribbean is considered essential contributions.

As an engaged activist, he was responsible for the General Association of Guadeloupean Students and a prominent member of the Popular Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe. He worked towards the establishment of the Master’s program in Humanities and Social Sciences in Guadeloupe.
