Vision Pro Developer Kits Now Available for Order: Be the First to Get Yours!

Developer kits ahoy: First developers can order Vision Pro

Apple has begun ordering developer kits for its first mixed reality headset, known as Vision Pro. Interested developers can borrow the headset by registering in Apple’s developer portal. However, the number of devices available will be limited initially. To obtain a Vision Pro, developers must submit a brief application providing details of their team’s development skills and existing apps. Priority will be given to developers who create an app that utilizes the functions and possibilities of the headset.

Once selected, developers will receive direct help from Apple in setting up and onboarding the headset. Regular “check-ins” with Apple experts will be available to assist with UI design and development, as well as providing two additional code-level support requests for debugging purposes. The duration of the loan process is unclear, as Apple states the headset must be returned “on request”.

For those not selected for the loan program, they can visit Apple directly to have the device demonstrated. The Vision Pro Developer Labs are one-day events taking place in several locations, including Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. These labs allow developers to see existing visionOS, iPadOS, and iOS apps running on the headset. Developers must be at least 18 years old and members of the Apple Developer Program or Apple Developer Enterprise Program. Active development of a visionOS app is required, although existing iPadOS and iOS apps are also accepted.

It is currently unknown how many spots are available for the labs, and individuals must provide a screenshot of the app in the visionOS simulator when registering. Apple recommends that both a designer and an engineer attend, but each person must apply individually for the same day.

Overall, Apple is actively involving developers in the testing and optimization of apps and games for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The company aims to ensure that apps run smoothly on the headset’s “unlimited spatial canvas.”
