Lessja Zurenko, who had won the first two rounds of the Indian Wells with ease, was set to play against Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. However, she canceled the match due to a reported panic attack. Zurenko had spoken to WTA boss Steve Simon before the match, and according to her, he made insensitive comments about the war in Ukraine.
Zurenko spoke to the Ukrainian online medium BTU and said, I just had a nervous breakdown after all the things I heard. It was a panic attack. I had trouble breathing. I was absolutely shocked by what I heard.”
