Two suspects brought to justice

Forty-eight hours after the incident, two individuals will soon be tried. According to information provided by the Paris prosecutor’s office to Agence France-Presse on Monday, September 25th, a minor will be tried for “violence” and “aggravated damage”. This is in relation to the attack on a police car during the protest “against police violence” in Paris on Saturday. A legal adult will be presented to a judge on Tuesday.

The two men are suspected to be involved in the attack on the police car. The minor will appear before a juvenile judge for “violence” and “aggravated damage” due to the circumstances in which they were committed “as a group” and against a “person holding public authority” or “public property,” as stated by the public prosecutor’s office.

As for the legal adult, their custody – which began shortly after the protest on Saturday – was extended until the end of the afternoon on Sunday and Monday, before the prosecutor’s office decided to refer them to court. The public prosecutor’s office will announce on Tuesday morning the next legal steps to be taken.

In this case, a total of five people were detained for questioning. Three of them were eventually cleared of any involvement and released over the weekend.

No administrative investigation after a firearm was brandished. The entourage of Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez also indicated that he had decided not to open an administrative investigation. Indeed, a police officer had brandished his firearm to repel the protesters, while his car was under attack. It was added that there is no suspicion of professional misconduct on the part of the officer.

On Saturday, during this protest starting from Gare du Nord, a police car, stuck in traffic, was attacked “with iron bars” by several individuals dressed in black, according to the prefecture of police. One of the officers briefly stepped out of the vehicle with a firearm to keep the protesters at bay. He aimed at the individuals gathered around the marked vehicle for a few seconds.

The intervention of other police officers afterwards “stopped the action and ensured the safety” of the officers present in the vehicle, the prefecture explained. Four officers were in the vehicle and three of them suffered “minor injuries” to the neck, as stated by Laurent Nuñez on Saturday.
