The Left Comes Out on Top as the Ruling Party Loses a Senator

The list bringing together the components of the municipal majority, the Socialists, EELV, the PCF, Paris en commun, and Génération.S, has won two-thirds of the seats in the Senate of the capital, sending three ecologists in particular.

The left-wing coalition, stemming from Anne Hidalgo’s municipal majority, has won its bet: the main left-wing list is sending eight out of twelve Parisian Senators to the Luxembourg Palace. The divided right-wing obtained four seats, while the presidential majority came out empty-handed, according to sources at Paris City Hall.

The list bringing together the components of the municipal majority, the Socialists, EELV, the PCF, Paris en commun, and Génération.S, has captured two-thirds of the seats in the Senate of the capital, sending three ecologists, including former presidential candidate Yannick Jadot, according to a tweet from Anne Hidalgo’s first deputy, Emmanuel Grégoire.

“This is a historic victory for the ecologists in Paris,” emphasized Yannick Jadot, who believes that it “reflects the growing strength of the ecologists in this territory,” also highlighting the success of the coalition.

Yannick Jadot also described it as “another defeat for the government when it comes to local elections,” as the outgoing senator from the presidential majority, Julien Bargeton, a former Socialist deputy, was not reelected.

“It is excellent news for the left and the Parisian ecologists, as well as for my team,” welcomed Mayor Anne Hidalgo. “It is a great lesson that when there is unity, we score points.”

Four seats for a divided right-wing

Despite divisions on the right, with three competing lists, the official LR list, supported by the mayor of the 7th arrondissement and leader of the opposition in Paris, Rachida Dati, obtained three seats: the outgoing senator Catherine Dumas, the mayor of the 16th arrondissement Francis Szpiner, and the elected representative of the 14th arrondissement Marie-Claire Carrère-Gée.

Agnès Evren, the head of the Parisian federation who had been removed from the list, obtained a score that comfortably allows her to secure her seat.

Welcoming the “expression of confidence from the councilors” for a unifying list, Agnès Evren, who was supported by LR mayor of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, Philippe Goujon, and the Centrist members of Paris, recalls leading “a unifying list that embodies a winning strategy.”

“I am bringing a seat to my political family,” she emphasized, noting that she is not “responsible for the division.”
