The iconic Le Bretagne cinema closes its doors due to lack of audiences

The historic Le Bretagne cinema in Paris has closed its doors after being acquired by Pathé in the Montparnasse district. The final screening was held on Tuesday 13 November, with only three spectators in attendance. Inaugurated on September 27, 1981, Le Bretagne was once considered an institution in the 6th arrondissement, known for showing exclusive premieres and attracting large audiences.

Pathé, which acquired the cinema in 2009, has revealed that Le Bretagne has struggled to attract audiences in recent years, with only 20,000 visitors in 2023 compared to an expected total of 700,000 across their other nearby cinemas. As a result, the decision was made to transfer the operations of Le Bretagne to the other venues in the area, including PathéParnasse, Miramar, and Montparnos.

Despite the closure, the premises remain under the ownership of Pathé, who initially considered converting it into a theater before realizing it was too small. Alternative options for the future of the building are currently being explored in coordination with the city of Paris.
