The film, initially planned for Paris, was finally shot in Marseille

Taxi is an iconic French film that has become synonymous with the city of Marseille. The movie follows the story of a pizza delivery man named Daniel who becomes a taxi driver. He navigates the streets of Marseille in his custom Peugeot 406 with precision and speed. The film was initially planned to be set in Paris, with well-known actors in the lead roles.

The film was shot in Marseille for budget and logistical reasons. Luc Besson, the writer of the screenplay, was unable to direct the film due to his involvement in another project. The production company, Gaumont, decided to relocate the film to Marseille to reduce costs and acquire permissions for filming stunts and car chases.

Despite facing challenges during production, Taxi became a tremendous success, resulting in the creation of a new production company, EuropaCorp. The film’s success also caused Gaumont to regret their decision to withdraw from the project. Taxi continues to be celebrated for its thrilling car chases and its association with the city of Marseille.
