Notre-Dame de Paris: construction of the cathedral’s framework is completed

Five years after the fire, Notre-Dame de Paris has finally regained its framework. Workers completed the installation on Friday, January 12th, ahead of its planned reopening on December 8.

The silhouette of Notre-Dame de Paris has been restored. The framework, identical to that crafted over 800 years ago, now overlooks the cathedral. The last rafter of the chancel is in place. It is an unforgettable moment for the carpenters, who took a family photo to immortalize the occasion. In record time, the new beams were handcrafted with an axe, just like the first builders. The axes were specially designed to carve the oak, as in the Middle Ages.

The completion of the carpentry work on Friday, January 12th, was symbolized by the placement of the last peg, to the applause of the companions. A bouquet was placed on the abbot’s pin by the youngest apprentice carpenter. “We have less than 11 months left. (…) We do not rest on our laurels,” says Philippe Jost, President of the public institution to rebuild Notre-Dame de Paris. The cathedral will reopen to the public and for worship on December 8.
