Tested: Kontron K3851-R1 Mainboard with RAM Error Correction

Mainboard in the test: Kontron K3851-R1 with RAM error correction

Intel’s Core-i-12000/13000 processors now have the ability to protect main memory against bit errors through Error Correction Code (ECC), but only if used in conjunction with certain chipsets like W680 for workstations and R680E for embedded systems. Unfortunately, very few W680 and R680E boards are currently available on the market, and the cost of the former is over 450 euros. However, the Kontron K3851-R1 is a slightly cheaper alternative that is assembled in Germany.

Intel has been selling special variants of the Xeon CPU family for small servers and industrial PCs for years, which are closely related to the Core i types. Xeon E 2000 chips offer the critical advantage of ECC RAM for error correction. ECC RAM can now be used in “normal” Core i types since the Core i-12000 generation (Alder Lake), and even in the Core i-13000 (Raptor Lake).

The Kontron K3851-R1 board was acquired by Kontron from the former Fujitsu mainboard department in Augsburg. It is a viable alternative to the W680 and R680E boards, but it is only available at a few retailers.
