Sony Unveils the Alpha 6700: The Ultimate APS-C Top Model

APS-C top model: Sony presents the Alpha 6700

Sony has unveiled their latest mirrorless APS-C camera, the Alpha 6700. This model offers features that were previously only available on full-frame cameras. It boasts a back-illuminated CMOS APS-C sensor with 26.0 megapixels and 5-axis image stabilization for longer exposure times. The Bionz XR image processor allows for 4K video recordings at up to 120 frames per second and offers a dynamic range of over 14 f-stops. The camera also utilizes the S-Cinetone picture profile for cinematic images with realistic skin tones.

The Alpha 6700 incorporates an AI processing unit that can recognize various subjects with high accuracy, including people, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes. It has improved animal detection compared to its predecessor, the Alpha 6600, and can accurately track subjects even when their faces are obscured. With 759 phase-detection points covering 93% of the image area, the camera enables subject tracking over almost the entire frame.

The camera excels in recording moving images, and Sony has introduced a new shotgun microphone to complement this capability. It can record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second with 6K oversampling, supports advanced color sampling formats, and offers Breathing Compensation to prevent focus point shifting when zooming. Additionally, users can import their own lookup tables (LUTs) to preview the final look during recording. The camera’s multi-interface (MI) accessory shoe is compatible with digital audio interfaces, enabling direct transmission of digital audio signals.

The Alpha 6700 will be available at stores from the end of July, with pricing starting at 1700 euros. It will be offered in two kit options, one with the SEL 16-50 mm 3.5-5.6 OSS PZ lens and another with the SEL 18-135 mm 3.5-5.6 OSS lens. A new shotgun microphone, the ECM-M1, will also be available for 400 euros.

In addition to the camera announcement, Sony has also introduced a new telephoto zoom lens, the FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II. This lens offers faster autofocus compared to its predecessor and is the first zoom lens with a reproduction ratio of 1:2 throughout its focal length range. It features 19 lens elements in 13 groups, including special lenses for error correction, and offers image stabilization for steady shots. The lens will be available in stores in July for 2000 euros.
