Seven Kilometers of Suspended Cycling Paths: Prefecture Responds to Paris City Hall

For the 2024 Olympic Games, the city of Paris had announced 60 km of cycling paths to connect the various Olympic sites. According to David Belliard, deputy mayor in charge of Transport, there are still seven kilometers pending.

The total of the 60 kilometers of cycling paths announced by the city of Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games will be completed. David Belliard, deputy mayor in charge of Transport, indicated that “out of all the Olympistes (name of these planned paths for the Olympics) that we have announced, seven kilometers are still pending because we are waiting for a favorable opinion from the prefecture of police.”

He wants to raise awareness. “What I expect is for us, especially the government, to turn the words (of the 100% cycling Games) into actions and allow us to progress with the work we are currently carrying out.”

The Paris prefecture of police is responsible for giving an opinion or making recommendations when these paths are part of the Paris roads.

“Reviewing these files involves constructive exchanges with municipal services and a majority of them do not raise any difficulties that cannot be overcome technically,” responded the Paris prefecture of police to BFM Paris on Monday.

“However, some of them lead the prefect of police to issue unfavorable opinions or modification recommendations on projects that would disrupt the movement of emergency services or police or BSPP interventions,” it adds.

And as an example of obstacles to the construction of these Olympistes, it cites “reducing the number of lanes on already saturated roads, the layout of insufficiently wide paths, or arrangements that lead to uncertain traffic redirection on neighboring roads in the absence of traffic studies.”

“The city of Paris then has the possibility to rework its project and present it again, taking into account the recommendations of the prefect of police,” concludes the prefecture.
