Schwesta Ewa on Her Past: A Personal Reflection on Shame and Growth

Schwesta Ewa in the BILD interview: "When I see old videos of myself, I'm ashamed"

Schwesta Ewa, born Ewa Malanda, is a rapper who has had a life marked by violence and abuse. Born in Poland, she got involved in red light areas and began selling her body on the streets at the age of 18. However, she found a way out of this vicious cycle through German rap. In 2017, she was convicted of tax evasion and 35 assaults, resulting in a prison sentence of 2.5 years. During this time, she was separated from her one-year-old daughter, Aaliyah, for six months.

However, since her release from prison in February 2021, Schwesta Ewa has reorganized her life; now living with her daughter in Düsseldorf, she has changed her priorities and attitude for the better. In an interview with BILD, she admitted that motherhood changed her, stating: “My daughter made me a better person.”

However, Schwesta Ewa still struggles with her past, including nightmares and fear of leaving her daughter with other people. She has also experienced social stigma, as Aaliyah was once excluded from a game because of her mother’s past.

Schwesta Ewa worries about how she will explain her past to her daughter as she gets older. In an interview with BILD, she stated that she will be honest with her daughter: “I owe that to my child.” Despite her past, Schwesta Ewa is hopeful for her daughter’s future, stating on her Instagram channel: “I hope that one day my daughter can be proud of me.”
