RoboCup German Open to Host Distributed Tournament Once Again

RoboCup German Open will again take place as a distributed tournament

The RoboCup German Open 2023 is currently underway, two months before the World Championship in Bordeaux. The competition will be held at different locations and times. The Rescue League competition started on Monday at the German Rescue Robotics Center in Dortmund. Teams and their robots must complete various tests, including opening doors, recognizing objects, and handling objects. These skills are combined during the “DRZ Challenge” in a simulated chemical accident.

180 junior teams will meet in Kassel on Thursday after qualifying in regional tournaments. This German final determines who can participate in the World Championships in Bordeaux. The German Open has no qualifying significance for adult teams, but it is still an important milestone for testing the robots under real competitive conditions and preparing for the World Cup.

The Logistics League competition begins on Thursday at RWTH Aachen University, where robots must autonomously plan and carry out transport in a production environment. They must navigate, manipulate objects, and react to malfunctions to find alternative solutions. The competition is not open to spectators, but short visits can be arranged.

The Standard Platform League competition, called GORE (German Open Remote Event), is one of the most spectator-friendly competitions. Teams of seven will play against each other at the Hamburg Center for Free-Electron Laser Science using Nao robots from Aldebaran Robotics. Spectators can also follow the games online via live stream.

The RoboCup@Work League competition in Magdeburg from June 1st to 3rd involves solving problems of mobile manipulation and navigation in a commercial-industrial environment. Only a maximum of eight teams can participate at the Stimulate research campus of the Otto von Guericke University.

However, the finale will take place on Sunday as part of the “Long Night of Science,” where spectators have a good chance of viewing the competitions. The RoboCup German Open is an exciting platform to showcase the latest developments in robotics and artificial intelligence.
