Reducing Speed on the Peripherique to 50 km/h Could Increase Pollution!

The city of Paris is planning to reduce the maximum speed on the ring road to 50 km/h, but some are denouncing it as an ecological absurdity! This announcement has caused quite a stir, with some associations beginning to raise their voices.

As of September 14, 2024, the city of Paris wants to lower the maximum speed on the ring road to 50 km/h. According to the city hall, this is an ecological decision for the well-being of the local population. However, some associations disagree.

One of these associations is 40 Millions d’Automobilistes. The association is pointing to a study to denounce the negative effects of reducing the speed to 50 km/h. According to this study on pollution at different speeds, CO2 emissions increase when a car is traveling around 50 km/h. On the other hand, emissions are at a minimum when we drive at around 70 km/h. 40 Millions d’Automobilistes therefore denounces this argument and claims that it is not valid in the desire to lower the speed to 50 km/h.

The city of Paris aims to implement this measure in order to “drastically reduce pollution linked to automobile traffic”. However, according to this study, this argument is not valid. “A reduction in speed to 50 km/h would not represent any environmental benefit. This decision adds to a list of anti-automobile resolutions by the city of Paris,” explains Philippe Nozière, president of the association 40 Millions d’Automobilistes.

The association goes further by involving Clément Beaune, Minister of Transport, in a letter. It asks the minister to intervene with the city hall of Paris regarding this measure. Just a few days ago, Clément Beaune had criticized this decision. Could this be enough to make the city hall of Paris change its mind?
