Ministry Urges Implementation of Rules in AI and Consumer Protection Confrontation

AI v. Consumer protection: Ministry calls for rules

The Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection is urging for clear guidelines in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The technology has become ubiquitous in our daily lives, from credit ratings to virtual assistants. However, this prevalence can lead to an increase in prejudice and discrimination. To avoid this outcome, AI systems must be thoughtfully trained, evaluated, and verifiable before being introduced to the market.

The Green Party has also pointed out that AI can exclude consumers from full participation in economic life. To address this issue, it is imperative to ensure that AI does not perpetuate discrimination but instead promotes equality and fairness.

Recently, the German Ethics Council issued a statement supporting strict regulations on the use of AI. The council, an independent body that deals with ethical challenges in science, medicine, and healthcare, warns against the use of AI to replace human decision-making. AI should not be allowed to conduct rampant, real-time monitoring or lead to automated prejudices through “predictive policing.”

As AI continues to play an integral role in our lives, it is crucial to establish clear regulations and ethical considerations to ensure its benefits are accessible to all without increasing discrimination and prejudice.
