On Wednesday, March 20, at the headquarters of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Organizing Committee, the draw for the Olympic football tournaments will take place. Before knowing what awaits the French teams this summer, the different pots have been revealed, allowing us to already get acquainted with the competition.
It will be a few more days before the schedule for the men’s and women’s Olympic football tournaments is well established. It is only next Wednesday, at the end of the day, that Thierry Henry’s players and Hervé Renard’s players will know their opponents for the summer. In the meantime, the different pots for the competition have been announced by the organizers.
The French teams will be in Pot 1, draw on March 20
As the host country, France will be in Pot 1 of both competitions. In the women’s draw, the French team will be alongside Spain and the United States, two giants of world football that they will not face in the group stage. It should be noted that 12 teams are qualified for the Games. They will be divided into four pots, each containing three teams.
Pot 1: France, Spain, United States
Pot 2: Germany, Japan, Canada
Pot 3: Brazil, Australia, Colombia
Pot 4: New Zealand, two nations from the African zone yet to be determined
On the men’s side, there are not 12 but 16 teams qualified for the tournament. Four teams will be divided into four pots, based on a ranking established according to past sporting performances in the last five editions of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament. Once again, the French team will be placed in Pot 1 as the host country.
Pot 1: France, Argentina, two nations from the Asian zone yet to be determined
Pot 2: Spain, New Zealand, Paraguay, Morocco
Pot 3: United States, Egypt, Mali, and a nation from the Asian zone yet to be determined
Pot 4: Dominican Republic, Israel, Ukraine, and the winner of the intercontinental playoff between a nation from the Asian zone and Guinea
