Microsoft 365: Archive sends dead files to long-term storage

Microsoft introduced two new cloud tools for its 365 portfolio at the Inspire 2023 event. The first tool, Microsoft 365 Backup, aims to provide a backup solution for businesses to protect against data loss. It allows administrators to back up data from OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange, and offers both granular and bulk disaster recovery options. Microsoft promises fast recovery speeds and provides a service level agreement for data recovery.

The second tool, Microsoft 365 Archive, helps companies manage their data by offering a cost-effective solution for long-term storage. Not all data is required for day-to-day business, but remains relevant for accounting and compliance purposes. By using Microsoft 365 Archive, companies can store this data in SharePoint as a “cold data storage” tier and retrieve it when needed. The archiving process can be automated using PowerShell scripts and individual policies.

Both tools offer integration with third-party software through APIs. Microsoft has already partnered with established vendors such as AvePoint, Barracuda, CommVault, Rubrik, Veeam, and Veritas for its new backup product. The public preview phase for both tools will begin later this year, and interested parties must apply to Microsoft to participate.

Overall, these new cloud tools from Microsoft provide businesses with options for data management, backup, and long-term storage within the 365 ecosystem.
