Homophobia: Increase in number of assaults in Paris

The number of homophobic attacks in the French capital is already worse than last year, with 419 reported incidents so far this year, according to Elise Lavielle, Deputy Director of the Prefect’s Office. In 2022, there were 400 homophobic acts in Paris, making the city the most affected in France with a rate of 18.1 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants. Lavielle also stated that no specific neighborhood is targeted more than others, including the Tuileries district, known as a meeting place for the local gay community.

To address the issue, at least one “LGBTQIA+ reference officer” is present in every police station in the capital. Lavielle confirmed that 72 cases have been solved, resulting in 56 arrests. The national plan against hatred and anti-LGBT+ discrimination aims to have 100% of police officers and gendarmes trained and sensitized to these issues by May 2024, as stated by Minister Isabelle Lonvis-Rome.
