Government advises against deliveries of parcels during games, internet users furious

The Ministry of Transport recommends planning ahead for package deliveries. According to the website anticiperlesjeux.gouv.fr, the invitation is to have packages delivered outside of the Olympic Games period. This advice has caused frustration among many internet users.

In the FAQ section, under the question “As an individual, will it be possible to receive packages or deliveries during the Games?”, the government advises to have packages delivered “before July 24, after September 8, or between the two Olympics, from August 12 to 27, 2024.” If this is not possible, the government recommends to “favor deliveries at hours and days with less traffic,” “favor deliveries by bike or on foot,” and “favor a pickup point outside the security perimeters.”

During the Olympics, the government advises not to: go to work, use public transportation, order packages, move around as you want, attend events (unless you are wealthy/lucky), keep your accommodation (if you are a student), or be a bookseller […]

The advice has been heavily criticized on social media. A tweet from Farah RK expressed frustration: “Transport, ticket prices, QR codes for movement, students leaving their apartments and now ‘packages’… In short, the Government invites you to let tourists live quietly during #JO2024 at the expense of your daily lives….” Christian Delporte, a history professor, commented that “We have never seen a sports event as anxiety-inducing.”

For several months, in order to avoid congestion on the RER, buses and subways this summer, former Minister of Transport Clément Beaune and the President of the region Valérie Pécresse are urging “everyone who can to telework” during the Olympic Games, from July 26 to August 11. The risk is real, as revealed in a letter obtained by Le Canard Enchaîné, where the prefect of the region Marc Guillaume warns that “saturation levels will be consistently exceeded” for 11 metro lines, 5 RER lines and 5 Transiliens during the Games.
