GM Announces Electric Cars now Compatible with Tesla’s Superchargers

General Motors: Electric cars can be charged at Tesla's superchargers

Tesla’s Model Y has taken the lead as the best-selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023. This achievement is due to the company’s early decision to set up its own charging network. In North America, General Motors (GM) has announced that its electric cars will also be able to use Tesla’s charging network from 2024. Starting next year, an adapter will be required for GM’s electric cars to be able to draw power from Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS).

The adapter requirement will apply until 2025 when all of GM’s electric cars will use NACS as standard. This means that if you want to charge at one of the CCS columns, an adapter in the other direction will be needed. GM plans to integrate all of Tesla’s superchargers into its own network and promises to make the charging stations of important operators accessible to its customers through an app, including EVgo, ChargePoint, and Shell Recharge.

GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, hopes to make the transition to electromobility smoother for their customers with this cooperation. She argues that the industry can move towards a uniform North American charging standard. On the other hand, Tesla’s senior director for charging infrastructure, Rebecca Tinucci, believes that giving every electric vehicle owner access to ubiquitous and reliable charging is a cornerstone of Tesla’s mission.

In summary, Tesla’s strategy of setting up its own charging network has been successful, and this cooperation with GM is a step towards a uniform electric vehicle charging standard in North America. Electric vehicle owners will soon have more charging options and a more seamless charging experience.
