FTC Lawsuit Boosts Speculation Surrounding Microsoft

Switch 2: FTC lawsuit against Microsoft fuels speculation

Is Nintendo working on a Switch 2? According to media reports in 2021, there have been rumors about Nintendo’s new version of the Switch. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa discussed upcoming game consoles in a conversation with investors, stating that the transition from the Nintendo Switch to a next-generation console should be smooth for customers. This sparked discussions and speculation about the upcoming Switch 2.

Another interesting piece of information comes from the FTC lawsuit against Activision Blizzard. An email from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was revealed, where Kotick expressed the expectation that Nintendo’s upcoming console will be able to compete with Xbox One and PS4 in terms of performance. This suggests a significant leap in performance compared to current Switch models.

The Switch has become a focal point in the court hearings over Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision. Lawyers and company representatives are debating whether the Switch is in competition with Playstation and Xbox or if it represents a separate market. Microsoft argues that the Switch is a direct competitor to allay antitrust watchdog concerns, while the US antitrust authority FTC denies that the Switch should be considered a competitor. Nintendo has not yet provided direct comments on its upcoming console.

Although it is not known whether the upcoming device will be an upgraded version of the Switch or an entirely new system, reports from Bloomberg suggest that a Switch 2 has been in development for years. Only time will tell what Nintendo has in store for its fans.
