Freshening Up the Apple Watch: The Widget Revamp of watchOS 10

watchOS 10: A widget fresh start for the Apple Watch

Apple unveils new features for watchOS 10 at the WWDC 2023 developer conference. The new version introduces a “smart stack” of widgets that can be accessed quickly through the digital crown, resembling the Siri watch face and Glances feature that were originally built into watchOS. The side button on the watch has been repurposed to access the new control center. Pressing the crown twice enables access to recently used apps. Apple also revamped its pre-installed watch apps to show more information on the small screens.

The latest update also brings new features for cyclists, with support for Bluetooth sensors that measure cadence and power. The watch can estimate Functional Threshold Power and display cycling training sessions in large format on the iPhone, which can be used as a speedometer. The compass function notes the last position with cellular network and receives elevation information. There is also a new topographic map view with trail information, but only in the US at launch.

In addition, Apple is introducing a new mindfulness app for tracking feelings and moods, as well as questionnaires integrated in Health to understand the risk of depression. The company is also building features into the operating systems designed to reduce the risk of myopia in children, including measuring distance from the screen and tracking time spent outdoors in daylight.

WatchOS 10 also supports mobile device management (MDM) for enterprise use. It also utilizes high-frequency movement data, allowing arm and hand movements to be recorded in apps such as golf and tennis. The update requires an iPhone with iOS 17 and will be available in the fall. Developers can download the update immediately.
