Filming of Action and Period Films Prohibited During Paris 2024 Olympics

During the 2024 Paris Olympics, the focus will mainly be on the sporting events, with minimal attention given to film production. On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image unveiled the rules that will govern film shoots in Paris and the Île-de-France region during the competition.

No outdoor filming during the Olympics

From June 16 to September 15, leading up to and during the competition, no period film or action film shoots (exceptional shoots) or standard film shoots will be allowed in areas hosting Olympic sites. Outside of these areas, standard shoots may be authorized, but in limited numbers.

These measures specifically apply to Saint-Denis and Saint-Ouen, which will house the Olympic Village. “Communes in other departments of the region, such as Versailles, which will host some competitions at Versailles Palace, will continue to issue permits while considering the requested perimeter and dates,” says the CNC. It adds, “Productions will be able to utilize numerous natural sets and benefit from the range of studios available throughout the territory.” Out of the 2,200 natural sets referenced by the Film Paris Region database, 1,683 are outside the Olympic zones.

Precautions beforehand

However, the Olympic period is not the only one affected. Throughout the year 2024, restrictions will be in place. Before March 15 and after November 1, standard and exceptional shoots will be allowed at Olympic sites “with particular vigilance on a few sensitive construction sites.”

Then, from March 16 to June 15, and from September 16 to October 30, period or action film shoots will be prohibited within the perimeters of Olympic sites. Standard shoots may be authorized “after expertise.”

50,000 square meters of studios

In 2024, around 20 studios, covering a total of 50,000 square meters, will be available. Parisian streets and interiors of Haussmann-style apartments have also been reconstructed. “Furthermore, whether it is Haussmannian Paris, Historical Paris, ‘postcard’ Paris, or even business districts, many towns in the Île-de-France region (Vincennes, Saint-Mandé, Courbevoie, Marly-le-Roi, Saint-Germain-en-Laye…) and in France (Rennes, Lyon, Reims, Marseille, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Strasbourg…) offer a Parisian ambiance,” emphasized the CNC.

In 2022, the City of Paris served as a backdrop for 102 feature films and 68 series, totaling 7,500 days of shooting.
