Controversy Surrounds Official Poster in the North

“Perhaps we are on the back of the poster?” For Eric Skyronka, the deputy vice-president in charge of Sports for the Lille Metropolis (Mel), the pill is hard to swallow and he makes it known to France 3. Ten days after it was unveiled, the official poster for the 2024 Paris Olympics continues to cause a stir in the North.

While the two other sites hosting events, Marseille and Tahiti, are well represented, the artist Ugo Gattoni, who claims to have spent 2,000 hours working on it, couldn’t find a single drawing to even represent a small fry stand to evoke the North.

Because the Lille Metropolis hosts the elimination phase of basketball and the final phase of handball at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. Prestigious events where France hopes to win medals.

Neglect or disdain? Neither, according to the Olympic Games organizing committee (Cojo) contacted by La Voix du Nord. “It is a representation that is neither comprehensive nor faithful to reality. Paris 2024 has nearly 40 competition sites; it would have been difficult to include all of them in this design,” they explain. The author of the poster, on the other hand, did not respond directly to the regional newspaper’s requests.

“With all the hours, time, and budget we dedicate… a little recognition wouldn’t hurt!” laments the Mel official before ensuring that the local authority “will be there” and that “everything will be perfect.”

For your information, the Mel has just launched a participatory budget of 1.2 million euros “to build the legacy of the Olympic Games in the area.” One thing is certain, the official poster will not be part of it.

On the other hand, the Nord department spent 180,000 euros to host the Olympic flame in its territory, and EELV elected officials also frowned upon the oversight on the poster.

To reconcile everyone, is there not a way to add a fry on top of the dome of the Invalides, instead of the cross that was also forgotten?
