Burglary at Vodafone Sales Partner Leads to Sensitive Data Breach

Data leak: Sensitive data copied during burglary at Vodafone sales partner

Vodafone Customers Alerted to Password Reset

Vodafone has contacted its customers to request they reset their passwords following a cyber incident at one of Vodafone’s partners, “Vertriebswerk”. It is believed that sensitive data such as names, birthdays, email addresses, mobile phone numbers, addresses, bank details and customer passwords were affected. Vodafone has blocked the passwords and sent a message via SMS to those affected. Customers should log into their account and change their password there. Vodafone is providing instructions as a PDF file. The mobile phone provider has lodged complaints and investigations are ongoing, with the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information being informed of the breach.

Instructions for Password Change Available on the Vodafone Website

Customers can use a form to change their password by post or fax, and the company is providing instructions as a PDF file. Customers who don’t have a MeinVodafone account can use this form. Investigations are still ongoing, and Vodafone has stated that it is paying increased attention and taking quick action if the incident has further repercussions. The company is not aware of any misuse of the data, but users should monitor customer accounts for unexpected changes.

Check for Abuse, Including Checking for Changes to Bank Accounts and Calls, Emails and Texts

Vodafone is urging customers to carefully check debits or bank account movements and watch out for phishing attempts. Recipients should not answer requests for customer passwords or other sensitive data. Those affected should contact Vodafone using the contact form or by calling the official numbers if they suspect misuse of data.

Vodafone Shuts Down Platforms Operated by Vertriebswerk

Vodafone has shut down its activate.vodafone.de and Vorteilstarife.net platforms, which are operated by Vertriebswerk, after the cyber attack. This platform was attacked on May 16, 2023, and email password and addresses have been copied. Approximately 7,500 customer passwords have been reset.

Cyber Incidents More Likely to Affect Large Companies

This incident is unfortunately not unique and highlights the need for companies to be vigilant about cybersecurity. Deutsche Leasing, supported by many savings banks, was also hit by a cyber incident over the weekend, with all IT systems taken offline. Leasing contracts can currently only be accepted on paper.
