Paavo Nurmi’s Medals Returning to Paris

Published on February 27, 2024, the International Athletics Federation (World Athletics) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi’s triumph at the 1924 Paris Olympics by bringing his five Olympic gold medals to Paris for the first time. Thanks to the generosity of Nurmi’s family, these medals will be displayed at the Paris Mint Museum as part of a larger exhibition on Olympic medals titled “Gold, Silver, Bronze: A History of the Olympic Medal.” The exhibition will be previewed to the media on March 26 and open to the public from the next day until September 22, 2024. Special guests expected for the opening include Mika Nurmi, Paavo’s grandson, and Lasse Viren, a quadruple Finnish Olympic champion. Nurmi won five gold medals at the 1924 Paris Games in the 1500m, 3000m team race, 5000m, individual cross-country, and team cross-country. He held 22 world records during his career and won a total of twelve Olympic medals, nine of which were gold. Nurmi passed away in 1973 in Helsinki at the age of 76.
