Despite the AI initiative: Supposedly not a direct ChatGPT competitor from Apple

Apple Not Developing ChatGPT Competitor, Says Bloomberg Journalist

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman believes Apple is not working on a direct competitor to ChatGPT, the increasingly popular chatbot that has reached hundreds of millions of users in a few months. Although OpenAI and Microsoft have presented the GPT-4 language model, and Facebook and Google have been working on Large Language Models (LLMs) for years, Apple has not undertaken any such endeavours according to Gurman.

Speculation suggests that Apple is testing a language AI to tell jokes with the language assistant Siri on Apple TV devices, but this has not been confirmed.

Apple May Be Behind Competitors in Language Capability

Apple has been at the forefront of language assistants since Siri was first launched in 2011. However, other competitors, including Amazon and Google have caught up, consolidating their positions with Alexa and Assistant. As a result, there has been a noticeable gap in the variable language capability of systems like ChatGPT, and instead users have to recall Siri commands.

Apple May Be Cautious about AI Developments

Gurman also suggests that at an AI summit held by Apple, which was open to all employees, no great developments were revealed. The summit was attended by employees from a range of departments such as AppleCare, corporate and even Apple Store Retail, but nothing forward-thinking was mentioned. This does not mean that Apple is not pursuing any internal projects, but considering the slow progress with Siri, it is unlikely that there will be anything comparable to Apple’s ChatGPT in the next few months.

Apple Could be Outpaced

OpenAI, in particular with its partner Microsoft, and various start-ups such as Claude from Anthropic, are currently making great strides. Google and Facebook are also reluctant to publish their systems, primarily to ensure that no one can mess around with them, but significant developments are expected by summer at the latest. With Apple not appearing to be pursuing any similar projects, they could find themselves outpaced.
