Alphabet, Google, and SpaceX’s Starship: A Tuesday of Pressures and Groundings

Tuesday: Alphabet & Google under pressure, SpaceX's Starship remains grounded

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, lost $55 billion in market value on Monday due to reports that Samsung is considering replacing Google search engine with Bing on its mobile devices. This could threaten Alphabet’s annual revenues of around $3 billion as well as Google’s monopoly in the market segment. To counter the threat, Google may soon offer text AI in its search engine, with a release date scheduled as early as May. Additionally, a new search engine called Magi is reportedly in the works.

The pressure on Google to counter the competitor Microsoft and its search engine Bing with ChatGPT integration is likely to increase further. The SpaceX Starship had to cancel its planned launch on Monday due to a problem with a pressure valve. The rocket was scheduled to perform a 90-minute test flight into orbit, highlighting SpaceX’s long-term plan to eventually bring materials and astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

On the other hand, Binance and Bittrex, two of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, have come under scrutiny. Binance was accused by the US capital market authority of enabling terrorist financing and money laundering, while the US Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil lawsuit against Bittrex for operating an unregistered securities exchange. Bittrex plans to defend itself against the allegations in court.

Lastly, a research group from the University of Wuhan in China reportedly gave AI full control of an Earth observation satellite for 24 hours, which violated the existing rules for mission planning. The AI took a closer look at various places on Earth, however, the research team is still speculating as to why the AI chose those specific locations.
