For the past few hours, the world of bikers in Paris has been rocked by a proposal to ban the circulation of thermal two-wheelers at night. But could it go further? As soon as this idea was announced, an association expressed its desire to go further.

Unsurprisingly, it is the Ras le Scoot organization that has come up with a grim project. Its members are leaning towards a ban on the circulation of motorized two-wheelers day and night. Franck-Olivier Torro, spokesperson for the collective known for its anti-biker positions, spoke on BFMTV:

“We are waiting for motorized two-wheelers to be completely banned from circulation. That’s what will happen (…) Action must be taken. It’s a scourge for many people.”

“A biker riding with a non-compliant exhaust pipe wakes up thousands of people (…) we would prefer a ban on motorized two-wheelers day and night, which would avoid having to check at night to see if there is circulation of motorized two-wheelers.”

Conflict of interest in sight?

A proposal and an intervention by a person who would be exposed to a conflict of interest on this issue. If this was not mentioned on BFMTV, internet users did not fail to point out that Franck-Olivier Torro works at Riese & Müller, a German bicycle manufacturer.

Thermal motorized two-wheelers are therefore direct competition for him in cities. Would this Ras le Scoot project therefore have primarily a profit motive? Because Parisian officials supporting this ban on circulation have promised help with the purchase of bicycles for users turning away from thermal motorized two-wheelers.

Towards an experiment?

It should be noted that the Independents and Progressives group is behind this project. Pierre-Yves Bournazel, Paris councilor and co-president of the political group in question, mentioned on February 6th, aids for the purchase of bicycles on BFMTV:

“Those who use thermal motorized two-wheelers, we tell them ‘We will help you financially to buy an electric two-wheeler, or a bicycle, or a cargo bike.'”

This political group wants to conduct an experiment on this subject. All of this must be debated in the Paris Council in the coming days. A project that bikers describe as useless.

This can be explained in various ways. The vehicles sold already meet strict standards. As for offenders, the police or sound meters can enforce the law, instead of penalizing everyone.
