500 cultural figures call for a ‘silent march’ in Paris on Sunday

Some 500 cultural figures, including Isabelle Adjani, Sami Bouajila, and Claude Lelouch, have called for a “silent, supportive, humanistic, and peaceful march” in Paris on Sunday, urging an immediate end to the “fratricidal war” between Palestinians and Israelis.

The march, organized by a collective called Another Voice and led by actress Lubna Azabal, will start at the Arab World Institute and lead to the Museum of Jewish Art and History, and then to the Museum of Arts and Crafts. A petition echoing the call has been published on change.org.

“Since October 7, 2023, horror and suffering have torn Palestinians and Israelis according to a monstrous mathematics that has already lasted a long time. This fratricidal war affects us all, and regardless of our reasons or affinities on either side of the wall, we want it to stop immediately and for both peoples to finally live in peace,” writes the collective, regretting that the words “choice” and “clan” are imposed on them.

“Facing the demand to choose a camp to hate, it is urgent to make another voice heard: that of unity. The voice of unity is the multiple, polyphonic, living voice, it is proof of the powerful bond that exists in France between Jewish, Muslim, Christian, atheist, and agnostic citizens.”

Among the signatories are actors such as Pierre Richard, Elsa Zylberstein, or Laure Calamy; authors including Leïla Slimani and Philippe Geluck; and singer Michel Jonasz. On Sunday, over 180,000 people demonstrated in France to show their rejection of anti-Semitism in response to the spike in hostile acts against people of the Jewish faith since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
