Prizes for "Jugend forscht" awarded: organic bag, EKG concept and deodorant salts

The national “Jugend forscht” competition has awarded the best young researchers in Bremen. Among them are three young women from Rüsselsheim in Hesse, who have created a compostable disposable bag. The bag is made of a biopolymer reinforced with hemp fibers, making it tear-resistant and biodegradable in three weeks. Over 170 talents from Germany presented more than 100 projects covering topics from environmental protection to medicine.

Two 18-year-olds from Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate won in the chemistry category with their research on aluminum in deodorants. They found that other substances have a similar effect to aluminum. Bastian Auer received the Federal President’s Prize for his exceptional ECG concept, using neural networks and artificial intelligence.

The visitors’ day was also a hit, with representatives of technology companies looking for new ideas and proud parents and teachers in attendance. The youngest participants were Jonas Bunkowski and Per Garbrecht (both 13) from Bremen, who worked on the Flettner rotor, a wind propulsion system for ships. They built a model boat with a polystyrene catamaran hull.
