Why Were New Radars Installed on the Peripherique?

You may have noticed them. Brand new radars have appeared this summer on the Francilian ring road. Located between the Porte de Clignancourt and the Porte de Saint-Ouen, these two new devices have worried many motorists. However, there is nothing to fear, reassure our colleagues from Le Parisien on Thursday, October 5.

Because these radars are not intended to strengthen the control of Parisian traffic, like the eighteen others that track speed violations throughout the area. They are actually “intelligent radars”, explains the newspaper, which will be used to control the dedicated lanes of the ring road during the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

In other words, these radars will ensure that the special lanes are only used by the professionals of the Games: athletes, delegations and other officials of the competition and its organization, who should thus be able to quickly reach the event’s sites. In total, 185 kilometers of “Olympic lanes” are expected to be set up throughout the Île-de-France region by the start of the Games.

In reality, existing lanes will be used and reserved for “accredited” vehicles – a total of 250,000 people – during peak hours. These lanes will mostly be located on the left, on major roads, reports Capital. Only signage and radars will guarantee compliance with the system.

Four more radars are set to be installed on the future Olympic lane, between Quai d’Issy, La Muette, Porte de Pantin, and Porte de Montreuil, according to Le Parisien.
