Who will replace the elected deputies in the Senate?

After their victories in the senatorial elections, three deputy mayors of Paris must be replaced. Several names are emerging.

Three deputy mayors of Paris were elected on Sunday to join the Luxembourg Palace. The new senators will be replaced at the next Council of Paris on October 6.

“These are rich people’s problems to have three deputy mayors to replace,” explained Anne Hidalgo’s entourage to BFM Paris Île-de-France. The united left (socialists-ecologists-communists) obtained eight seats in the Senate, while the divided right (LR and dissidents LR) obtained four.

Anne Hidalgo refused to comment on the upcoming changes in her executive on Sunday evening, preferring to savor her victory. “Every thing in its time,” said the mayor of Paris.

“Tonight, it’s a victory. And tomorrow, it’s renewal. It will also enhance skills. You know, going through positions as deputy mayors in the executive brings competences. It makes political careers grow, it will allow for renewal. I also know that those who have passed through the Paris City Hall are very committed to making our projects come to life,” said Anne Hidalgo in response to the prerogative in delegation assignments.

Several possibilities

Among those leaving, Ian Brossat, the communist deputy mayor for housing. He could be replaced by another communist deputy mayor, Jacques Baudrier, who is in charge of public works, according to several sources reported by BFM Paris Île-de-France as indicated by 20 Minutes and Le Parisien. It remains to be seen if he will retain the same responsibilities.

Communist Barbara Gomes is mentioned to manage the regulation of tourist rentals according to one source. But her entry seems unlikely. Another source mentions the entry of a socialist advisor for management of public works.

Colombe Brossel, in charge of cleanliness, is also leaving for the Senate. The deputy mayor in charge of human resources, Antoine Guillou, is expected to take over according to several sources confirming information from Le Parisien.

The last ecologist deputy mayor to be replaced is Anne Souyris, in charge of health. Two ecologists are in the running to take over the delegation.

Anne-Claire Boux could take over from Anne Souyris, according to a source at City Hall, or Alice Timsit. If the latter does not obtain the health portfolio, she could take over the popular neighborhoods instead of Anne-Claire Boux, according to another source at BFM Paris Île-de-France.

Among the newcomers, the president of the communist group Nicolas Bonnet-Oulaldj would replace Olivia Polski, the socialist deputy mayor in charge of commerce and crafts, according to several sources. The latter would in turn take over the responsibilities of Antoine Guillou, who is leaving for cleanliness.

Anne Hidalgo’s “veto” for two individuals

In the corridors of the Paris City Hall, commentators are speculating on the “extravagant demands” of the ecologists, as discussions continued this week between Emmanuel Grégoire and the ecologist group. However, two names are said to have a “veto” from the mayor, whispered rue de Lobau: ecologists Alice Coffin and Raphaëlle Rémy-Leleu.

“We are asking for assignments that are in line with our themes,” explained Fatoumata Koné, the president of the ecologist group, earlier this week to BFM Paris Île-de-France. She pleads for a deep restructuring with “coherent divisions to support projects.”

This spirit was not shared by Anne Hidalgo. According to her entourage, the mayor of Paris wants a “position-by-position” reshuffle, maintaining gender parity and political balance.

“We need to be efficient toward the end of our mandate. The Olympic Games will consume a lot of our time,” said Nicolas Bonnet-Oulaldj to BFM Paris Île-de-France.

Changes at the regional level

In the 16th arrondissement town hall as well, there will also be changes. The lawyer and mayor Francis Szpiner is joining the Senate, so he will have to leave his office within a month.

“I remain a councilor of Paris, a member of the municipal majority, president of the municipal majority group. And I have no intention of abandoning the 16th arrondissement,” he commented on Sunday evening to BFM Paris Île-de-France.

“The logic would obviously be for someone who has been working with me for years to take over,” he continued. One possibility is his first deputy, Jérémy Redler.

The senatorial elections also have consequences in the Île-de-France region. Ghislaine Senée, the president of the ecologist group, was elected senator for Yvelines. She resigned from her group presidency and Kader Chibane was chosen as her replacement.
