VfL Wolfsburg Takes on Union in 1-0 Showdown

1: 1 against Union - VfL Wolfsburg is on the spot

VfL Wolfsburg only managed a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin in their third meeting this season. The Wolves had previously lost the earlier encounters, a 2-0 defeat in the first half of the season and a 2-1 elimination in the DFB Cup.

The result granted the Wolves with at least one Bundesliga point, but it does not do much to support their campaign for international business. VfL is currently positioned in eighth place with 35 points, trailing Mainz by one point and Frankfurt by five.

Defensively, VfL put up a good show against Union, limiting their chances to score. However, the home team seemed to have difficulty taking advantage of the few scoring opportunities they had.

Although the Wolves managed to equalize and save themselves from a loss, Patrick Wimmer expressed disappointment in the team’s inability to secure a win. He complained, “We were the better team for 90 minutes and had clearer chances. It’s good that we came back, but we’re going home with a worse feeling because we didn’t win.”

The Wolves will be facing their former coach, Bruno Labbadia, in their upcoming match against Stuttgart on Saturday.

In the first half, both teams acted cautiously, with each side being disciplined and wanting possession and safety. There were only two exciting scenes in the first half, with Wolfsburg’s Mattias Svanberg putting a free kick on the bar, and Omar Marmoush missing the safe 1-0 when he ran alone against Union keeper Frederik Ronnow.

In the second half, things picked up, and the home side showed a quick reaction after Union Berlin’s Josip Juranovic made it 1-0 for the guests off a penalty. The Wolves equalised with the efforts of their substitutes, but they were unable to secure a win.

The draw was disappointing from Wolfsburg’s point of view, and it did not help bolster their position in the league standings.
