University of Paris Panthéon-Assas suspends lecturer for antisemitic remarks

On Monday, October 9th, the Union of Jewish Students of France denounced remarks made by a law professor at the University of Paris Pantheon-Assas on its social media platforms. According to the association, the professor allegedly stated in front of his students: “You’re late, I’ll do it like the rave,” “There’s electricity here, it’s not like Gaza,” and “Do we need rockets to wake you up?” These remarks trivialize the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, which took place on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, and resulted in the death of over 900 Israelis. According to another testimony from students close to the Jewish community at this law school, these remarks were made in front of first-year students on the Vaugirard campus.

When contacted by CheckNews, the University of Paris Pantheon-Assas confirmed that it had “become aware of indecent remarks, some of which had an anti-Semitic connotation, made on October 9th, 2023, by a lecturer during his constitutional law class. Students present in the room were understandably offended by the remarks made.”

The university further stated that it “strongly and unequivocally condemns these words, which are incompatible with the requirements of our teaching mission. After an investigation and consultations, the teacher in question has been temporarily and conservatively suspended in the interest of the service. The university’s disciplinary section has also been notified.”

When contacted by CheckNews, the teacher did not respond to our request for comment.
