Transforming Images to Drawings: Obtaining Dimensions using AI Technology

From image to drawing: How to get dimensions from AI images

Image-based artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion are ideal for getting inspiration for maker projects like furniture or unusual Raspberry Pi housings. However, these artificial brains only generate two-dimensional illustrations and not 3D models or blueprints.

Make editor, Johannes Börnsen, has shared a video tutorial on how to take measurements from a bedside table draft created by Midjourney with the free drawing program Sketchup Make. To follow along with the tutorial, you must generate an image of an imaginary object that shows visible lines running towards the vanishing point when viewed from a corner.

If you’d like to follow the tutorial on the same bedside table image used in the video, you can download it here. Alternatively, if you prefer to download the finished bedside table model in Sketchup Make 2017 format, find the relevant file here. Although Sketchup Make 2017 is no longer being developed, it still works on Mac OS, Windows, and Apple’s Silicon. Unfortunately, users can no longer download it from the manufacturer’s site but can get a copy from heise download.

Using the tutorial, makers can explore the possibilities of creating their own furniture designs or unique Raspberry Pi housings using AI-generated illustrations. The Sketchup Make program can help with the process of creating 3D models from these ideas.

Overall, this tutorial provides makers with a chance to test their capabilities and indulge their creative senses in their personal or professional projects. By combining AI with traditional drawing tools, makers can solve challenges and build unique, custom projects.
