Tim Cook Warns Apple about the Risks of AI

Apple and the AI: Tim Cook continues to urge caution

Apple’s Cautious Stance on AI and Machine Learning

The recent WWDC keynote by Apple CEO, Tim Cook, revealed the company’s cautious stance towards artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. While the rest of Silicon Valley is abuzz with large language models (LLMs), image generators, and chatbot technologies like Bing Chat and ChatGPT, Apple seems to prefer more technical terms such as machine learning.

Apple’s new M2 Ultra SoC boasts a faster neural engine for ML applications. However, the company has not revealed whether it is working on a competitor for Bing Chat, ChatGPT, or Bard. Apple’s language assistant, Siri, has finally eliminated the “Hey” prompt for its users. Still, it pales in comparison to modern LLMs, and the company is rumored to be considering a complete overhaul or reinvention of Siri.

Despite their covert activities, Apple is emphasizing their prudence and caution in the development and use of AI. Tim Cook fears that AI’s power has consequences and wants to avoid potential issues with bias and misinformation. He calls for regulation while acknowledging the rapid evolution of this technology. Apple is backing its internal AI development with job offers seeking experts in generative AI and large language models.

While Apple seems to be hesitant towards AI, hobbyists have already managed to merge ChatGPT with Siri months ago. These amateurs prove that Siri could indeed do with some upgrading and that maybe Apple should consider hiring them to develop their AI further.
