The Popov Brothers: Badminton Players on the Quest for Olympic Qualification

The Popov brothers, Toma and Christo, are united by the same dream. For months, the badminton players have been determined to qualify together for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In order to achieve this, the two Bulgarian-born players need to rise to the top 16 in the world. Toma is the elder of the family and has expressed that even if only one of them makes it to the Olympics, the other will be in the stands to cheer on their brother.

Their father, Toma Popov, who is also their coach, confirms the ambition to bring both of them to the Olympics and aim for a podium finish. Toma and Christo are currently ranked 25th and 27th in the world, respectively, but have the potential to climb the rankings before the April 30th qualification deadline for the Olympics. They also have the opportunity to qualify in men’s doubles as the second-best French pair.

Badminton, a family affair

Similar to the Lebrun brothers in table tennis, the Popov brothers are making a mark in the world of badminton as a duo, which is typically an individual sport.

The family history also plays a crucial role in their journey. Their father, Toma Popov, was a champion in Bulgaria and became their coach. The family moved to Fos-sur-Mer, France in 2004, and both brothers have been practicing the sport since a very young age.

Fos-sur-Mer, the family cocoon

The brothers have continued to train and compete while being based in Fos-sur-Mer, where they have an extensive support system. Despite being sometimes opponents on the court, they are always together as a family, driven by the same goal.

A link beyond sport

Their strong family bond has not hindered each of them from creating their own identity and cultivating their differences. Their father mentioned that they have different techniques and visions of the game, which makes them a formidable doubles pair.

They are unique athletes who are well worth following, and their qualification for the Olympics will be a significant milestone for French badminton.
