The Importance of Human Interaction in AI-Powered Education

AI in education: Don't ignore the human factor

Leading digital tutoring and training providers are taking advantage of the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in their programs. However, the founder and CEO of Easy-Tutor, Massimo Cancellara, reminds us of the importance of the human factor when it comes to the implementation of AI. Cancellara emphasizes that AI should serve as a tool to enhance the learning experience’s efficiency, but not as a more effective substitute for teachers or tutors.

Cancellara also stresses that the use of AI should have a considered approach to data protection. Education providers must be cautious about the sharing of personal data of children and young people, which needs special protection. With AI application’s development being mostly open source technologies from US companies, the AI-based data created must also be considered when developing regulations concerning data protection in Germany and the EU.

Several companies, such as GoodHabitz and GoStudent, have integrated AI in their course content. GoodHabitz’s “course expert,” Chat-GPT, uses AI to enrich their users’ course content. Meanwhile, GoStudent plans to develop an AI-based lesson plan generator to relieve its tutors of 15 minutes per lesson. Another tutoring provider, Simpleclub, has incorporated an AI-based exercise application that provides an unlimited number of exercises and matches the appropriate level for each selected topic.

Cancellara recognizes more AI tasks in the creation of individual curricula and the automated booking of tutoring appointments. AI’s tasks should result in more practice opportunities and interpersonal interaction. These tasks should serve to improve the learners’ experience, allowing more time for interaction with human tutors.

In conclusion, AI offers a more efficient learning environment but should only serve as a tool to supplement human interaction in education. As AI’s capabilities evolve, education providers must remain cautious and tread carefully when dealing with personal data. The development of regulations on AI application and data protection in Germany and the EU could further improve the safety and trustworthiness of its use in education.
