The custody of the alleged assailant has resumed

After the knife attack at the Gare de Lyon train station in Paris on February 3, 2024, the custody of the 32-year-old man suspected of injuring three people with a knife on Saturday morning resumed after an interruption due to the psychiatric state of the suspect, the Paris public prosecutor’s office said on Sunday, February 4.

The suspected assailant had been arrested on Saturday morning and placed in custody, but it was interrupted on Saturday evening because a behavioral examination revealed “a psychiatric condition incompatible with coercive measures.” He had been taken care of by the psychiatric infirmary of the police prefecture.

Three people who had intervened while the assailant had “grabbed a knife and a hammer” were injured. The life-threatening condition of the most seriously injured victim “remained at stake” on Sunday, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

The suspect, of Malian nationality, has been “regularly residing in Italy since 2016, with a perfectly valid title issued in 2019,” according to documents in his possession. This title allowed him to travel to France legally. He was previously unknown to French and Italian police, according to a police source.

An investigation for attempted murder has been opened and entrusted to the second district of the Paris judicial police, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office. The National Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office has also stated that it is observing the situation.
